THE SOLAR ALIGNMENT OF LA FORADADA
On the 4th of October (the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi) and on the 9th of March (the Feast Day of Saint Frances of Rome), sunlight passes through the arch of La Foradada and illuminates the remains of the old Franciscan convent located near Benitaia, just before sunset. It was precisely this astronomical phenomenon that determined the construction of the ancient convent at that exact place. The tradition of the solar alignment was lost for hundreds of years, together with the disappearance of the convent, but thanks to a study by the Egyptologist José Lull in 2006, it has been scientifically proven, and thus a piece of the cultural and historical heritage of La Vall de Gallinera has in this way been recovered. Every year, hundreds of people gather around the convent to see the phenomenon. To be able to do this, it is important to be in the exact place indicated on a specific map, seeing that the alignment varies depending on the day and year. It is important to protect the eyes with special glasses while looking at the sun because looking directly at it can damage a person’s eyesight.
