THE UPPER MILL

It was located near Benirrama, just to the left of the Gallinera River, from which it received water by way of a weir located in a meander of the river, slightly below La Venta de Baix and the Safareig spring, which is the washing place of Benirrama.

Remains of the pond, converted into a terraced piece of land, and the canal have survived, as has also the gully with two vaults separated by a pillar. The base of the canal had two mouths that directed the water towards two wheels connected to two grinding wheels. Most of the drain through where the water was sent back to the river has also survived.
It had two Catalan millstones for grinding wheat, oats, barley, chickpeas and, sporadically, corn, just like the other mills. The last miller was Emilio Andrés Alemany, from Benirrama, and his family was known as the Moliners. It stopped working during the period 1920-1930.
