La Vall de Gallinera Castles
In La Vall de Gallinera there are remains of six fortifications belonging to the Muslim era: the Almiserà fort, the Gallinera Castle, the Alcalà Castle, the Castellot next to Alpatró, the tower of La Foradada and the Llimener turret. Not all, however, were built at the same time, nor did their construction have the same goals.
The administrative organisation of the area revolved around the two main castles, Gallinera and Alcalà, each of which had a district under its control and Muslim farmhouses that paid their taxes in kind or in cash. Therefore, the territory of the valley was divided according to the limits of the two castles’ administrative powers. This territorial organisation still endured during the early days of the Christian era. In fact, when the Christian monarchs donated the castles and their lands, thus turning them into manors, they did it respecting the boundaries of the Muslim districts.
THE GALLINERA CASTLE
The Gallinera Castle:
The Castle of Gallinera, or Benirrama, is located at the eastern entrance to the valley. It sits on a rocky mound next to the Almiserà peak, at 475.6 metres above sea level.
THE BENISSILI CASTLE
The Benissili Castle:
Historically, it was known as the Castle of Alcalà, and with this name it appeared in the documents of the time, but it is better known as the Castle of Benissili, as this village is the closest one to the fortress.
THE TOWER OF LA FORADADA
The tower of la Foradada:
This watchtower must have had a considerable height, perhaps around 10 metres, according to experts. It was constructed with stones joined using a mortar mix. The interior was plastered and the floor was paved with a hardened layer of cement similar to that used for the mortar, but without stones.
THE CASTELLOT
The Castellot:
The fortification is made up of a tower with a square plan and a large portion of ground enclosed to form a slightly circular shape, bounded by a rammed earth wall. The tower is made of rammed earth upon a foundation of opus incertum masonry used to level the ground.
THE ALMISERÀ FORT
The Almiserà fort:
At the top of the Almiserà mountain, 725 metres above sea level, there are remains of a Muslim construction that was part of the fortifications of La Vall de Gallinera.
THE LLIMENER TURRET
The Llimener turret:
The Llimener turret is a very small building located near Alpatró. Remains of walls that define a rectangular perimeter can be observed.
